Washington, DC — US President Donald Trump announced Monday that he will place the District’s police force under federal authority and deploy National Guard troops to the capital, citing concerns over crime and homelessness.

Calling the move “Liberation Day in DC,” Trump told reporters at the White House that the city must be “taken back” and made “great again.” He is considering sending up to 1,000 National Guard personnel to patrol the streets.

“This is about restoring law and order,” Trump declared, dismissing official Justice Department statistics showing violent crime in DC at a 30-year low. He claims those figures are “manipulated” and pointed to the recent assault of a former White House staffer as proof of worsening conditions.

On Truth Social earlier in the day, the president promised that “crime, filth, and scum” would vanish, vowing to relocate homeless residents “far from the capital.”

The push has drawn sharp criticism from DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, who rejected Trump’s characterization of the city. Speaking on MSNBC, she said:

“People are coming here to live, work, and raise families. Any comparison to a war-torn country is simply false.”

Trump also slammed a $3.1 billion renovation of the Federal Reserve headquarters as “wasteful.”

This is not the first time the administration has deployed troops to a Democratic stronghold. In June, National Guard units were sent to Los Angeles during protests over federal immigration raids. California Governor Gavin Newsom sued the administration, calling the move unconstitutional, a position echoed by LA Mayor Karen Bass.
