HYDERABAD: With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting extremely heavy rainfall across Telangana from August 13 to 15, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has placed the state on round-the-clock alert. All government officials’ leaves have been cancelled, and helicopters are on standby for emergency rescue operations.
The IMD warned that Hyderabad and nearby districts — particularly Medchal and parts of Cyberabad — could face the worst impact. Addressing district collectors and senior officials via video conference from the Command Control Centre, the CM directed immediate precautionary measures to ensure zero casualties.
Ministers in charge of each district have been instructed to remain on the ground, while the IT and education departments will decide on work-from-home arrangements and possible school closures depending on the situation.
Public alerts will be issued through FM radio and other channels, warning about possible flooding, overflowing rivers, and unsafe bridges. Police will restrict movement on causeways, warn herders at risk of being stranded, and keep law and order personnel ready for traffic management.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) will coordinate with state agencies, and the health department will have ambulances on standby to assist vulnerable groups, including pregnant women. The electricity department will deploy mobile transformers and rapid-response teams to handle outages, while irrigation officials will monitor reservoirs, dams, and barrages 24/7, issuing timely updates to low-lying areas.
Animal husbandry authorities have been told to document livestock deaths from lightning and process compensation promptly. Meanwhile, Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda police commissioners will coordinate closely with GHMC, HYDRAA, and municipal bodies to manage emergencies.
Weather warnings will be broadcast regularly without creating panic, and police will prevent people from entering danger zones. "Our cities were designed for 2 cm of rain in 24 hours. We must be prepared for extreme events like cloudbursts," the CM said.
